Why are there weeds in my yard?
There is nothing better than seeing your grass green as temperatures begin to warm and winter retreats for another year. Tulips and daffodils are blossoming and even that familiar cloud of green pollen becomes a welcome sign… Spring is here! It is time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.
But wait. What is that protruding from your lovely turf? Surely that is not a weed! Why are there weeds in my yard?
Weeds are an unattractive nuisance. Weeds can also damage your lawn if they are not properly treated and/or removed. If you currently have a turf management program that includes weed control, it can be doubly frustrating to see weeds in your yard.
At Canopy, we take a comprehensive approach to weed control. Instead of blanket spraying chemicals, we apply a granular pre-emergent treatment during the optimal time for lawns based on turf type. We then spot spray weeds that may still appear.
Unfortunately, it is unrealistic to think that we will never see any weeds in our yards. Temperature, moisture, wind, birds, squirrels, and a variety of other factors in nature can allow weeds to pop up.
After an early warmup like we have seen this year, followed by heavy rainfall, weed pressure increases. In fact, NC State Turf Files issued a warning that weed pressure would be at higher than normal levels this year.
Many of the winter annual weeds that you are seeing in your yard right now will soon naturally die off because they do not tolerate heat well. Additionally, as your grass grows in with more density, it will begin to take over the weakening weeds. Mowing will also help with weed suppression, as winter annuals do not respond well to being cut. The exception to this, however, would be poa annua, which contains visible seed heads that will spread when mowed. These weeds should instead be pulled.
If you are receiving weed control treatments, the speed in which you will see weeds begin to wither and brown out may vary depending on the type of treatment product that is applied and also the weed variety. At Canopy Lawn Care, we are always happy to answer questions or help address concerns about the weeds in your yard. If there is anything that we can do to help, please do not hesitate to give us a call!
